Emergent

Summer lessons,

Not the ones from school.

Parent narratives,

Adults lounging by the pool.

Long walks,

Big jumps, train tracks.

A mile’s hike there,

A marathon’s crawl back.

Bags,

Floats and groceries.

Road trips, dust,

& Hozier CD’s.

Temporary homes,

Home-cooked meals.

Forgotten spices,

Burning wheels.

Skittles,

Gum and peach rings.

Staying up early,

Sugar gives morning wings.

Foggy mountains,

Endless trails.

Hot tubs,

Turkey wails.

Circus rings,

Sweaters at the boardwalk.

Beach is where I belong,

Beach is where my people flock.

One last night,

The summer’s end.

Something bigger,

Around the bend.

Fall lessons,

Back to school.

Adult world,

No more kids in the pool.

And a 1.
