O Great Spirits of the Woods

Silent but always listening

I look for you, but you

always elude my knowledge.

Do you hide among the roots,

the dark earth, the bugs and worms?

Or perhaps behind the bark,

In the trees' throbbing heart?

I feel you in the swaying boughs;

leaves trilling in the cool breeze;

warding off unwelcome folk

with biting bugs, obnoxious weeds.

I pray to live as you do:

unapologetic, shameless.

O great spirits of the wood,

silent and always blameless.
