The ghosts of past lovers

Wait on your windowsill.

Red lipstick stains

Between the glass panes

Smudged fingerprints decorating

The frayed grey curtains.

Look out on a clear day

At your overgrown garden

Of broken promises

That you kept hidden so well.

Our hot breaths that used to

Fog the glass

Have grown cold with goodbye.

Look out one somber morning

At the broken trails of lust

We forgot to cover up

Defiling the innocence

Of the dewdrops in the grass

I should've remembered

How temporarily they last.

Look out on a quiet night

At the broken crescent of a moon

Enjoy the view.

I polished the sky with my tears

During the last rainstorm.

When you're as lonely as me,

Look down

At the carpet instead.

Where my silhouette is

Still kissing your shadow

Still locked in an embrace

In this once familiar place

Where we danced with clumsy steps

That we long ago ceased to know

Look for me

Between the broken sunbeams

Now painfully reminding

Of the electricity crackling in your eyes

The lightning bolts flickering between your teeth

Rumbling like thunder in your contagious laugh

Resonating down through your fingertips.

We'd be the perfect storm

If only you didn't mistake my vulnerable whispers

For the wind, sighing your name.

Some things we couldn't fix.

Yet the broken clock ticks in your absence

The door ripped from its hinges

Locks after you leave

I've drawn the curtains shut

On the reflections of our shared past

On the opaque glass

Through which we always seemed to see

Things so differently.

I still miss your

broken heart.
