Gloating

I have every intention of keeping my eye averted. I do not want to look in the mirror. I don’t like what I see and I particularly don’t like who I’ll see.

And I do okay, spend my time staring towards the floor. Not the best of ideas – it sure could do with a wash. Not now....dirt is just about the last thing in on my mind.

She somehow manages to catch my eye, and once caught, she knows that she can exert her power. I won’t be able to look away. My red eyes, the black circles; both tell her that I’ve been crying most of the night.

Well, from her gloating expression it’s clear she has noticed and is going to make the most of it.

You know,” she says, “you must be the biggest fool ever.”

Stop it,” I say. I hate talking to her, even acknowledging her existence.

Love! Do you really think anyone could possibly love you?”

Shut up!” She’s hit a too sore spot with that comment.

No one wants the real you. Nobody wants to even know you. Just the little airborne particles, the little words you sometimes say....oh, they’ll be friends with the ghost of you, but the real you – stay the hell away.”

Why are you doing this, trying to make me hurt even more?”

You need to face up to the truth. Take steps. And this is not about suicide, in case any ears are listening at the door. This is about ISOLATION. Shut yourself up, fasten the locks and throw away the keys.”

I glare at her smirking, victorious look. I have a selection of masks, to hide away behind and to help me make it through the day. Putting one firmly in place, I turn for a second to face her. She can’t see the tears that are falling down my real cheeks now, can’t see how much the truth of her words has hurt.

Some how, some way I’ll make it through the day but the night, well, that’s a different matter.
