she asked me to love her
that i might see and know her.
she asked me to let her
be what she would be
and to stick with her
come what may

she promised me it was right
she promised me it was better
and i knew she told the truth
but i was greedy and cowardly

so instead
i tolerated her
as the past of
some sexier future.
a means to an end.
i laid her at the altar
of an imaginary utopia
that was never going to exist

or else i resented her
as an afterthought,
as the grey old future
of some robust young past
i laid her at the altar
of selective memory
a musty, rotting nostalgia

i have learned my lesson.
i will love her instead.
