child me

packed away

the traumatic events

of yesterday

she began the task

at the age of six

with help from

The Santa Claus Man

who gave her the gift

however unknowing

of surviving

unthinkable

unspeakable

pain

now I own

to my dismay

in the attic of my psyche

little black boxes

tricksy boxes

full of spikes and thorns and shadows of dreams

Pandora’s Boxes

unwise to open

impossible to keep closed

bubbling over with secrets

tangled webs of good and evil

light and dark

precious memories

bound in pain

brilliant gems

deeply mired

in foul slime

a cursed crypt of

the spiritual me

emotional detritus

like blood splatter

marks the sides and lids

and the floor where

each rests

restlessly

lurking

trembling

eager to tip

and spill

the creeping

darkness

within

it is time

I think

to flip their lids

release

the captives within

to set them

free

and with them

free

whatever remains of

me
