he punches walls

smashes mirrors

smashes anything that's not me

takes me places

daytime

anytime

middle of the night

middle of my fourth birthday

takes me to the zoo

zoo is closed

I close my eyes

pretend I can see animals

zebras and walruses

and I smile

because he wants me to smile

and tell myself he's not forcing me to

then middle of the night he leaves

no postcards

no letters

no return address

I can remember him sometimes

at a certain time of night

but there's no zoo outside my window

no zebras

no walruses
