 Shooting the Stars

By

T. A. Prentiss

I was

Saving

The best

Of me

And you

Were on

Your last

Leg of

Empathy.

Sweet blushes

Untested lips

You had

To have

Me

Because no

One else

Did.

While

You played

The game

To score

For your

Collection

I was

Licking raindrops

and dancing

in storms

Nothing scared

me because

I was an

Infant of

Love, newly

Born.

Tangled in

Gaze

Your

Knowing eyes

Caused my

Body to shake

I didn’t

Know that

No matter

How close

You held

Me I was

Still at

Arm’s Length.

I loved

You

With the

Passion

Of one

Who has

Never been

Heartbroken

And you

Could not

Trust me.

I ripped

Nails

Clawing at

The brier

Around your

Soul

But

The hardest

I bled

Was not

enough to

Fill your

Hole.

So

A shooting

Star

A match burned

Down

You and I

We

Died out.
