Barred

So many days I’ve travelled. So many nights. The miles I’ve covered I lost track of long ago.

It’s so hard to keep on putting one foot in front of the other, to even stay standing up. Blister upon blister until my feet are raw and weeping. But I have to keep on going – if I ever want to get to you, that is.

Not far now. I can feel that I am getting closer to where I belong.

And then there appears a massive gate in front of me and there is no way around it. I bang on the gate, call out but for ages no one answers and the gate remains firmly barred shut.

I hammer on it with my fists, so hard that they bleed. I scream and shut until finally someone appears at the top of the wall beside the gate.

Be gone!” he shouts. “You are not wanted here. Go back to where you came from.”

But, I can’t,” I cry. “I belong here now!”

That’s where you are wrong! You have no right to be here. We don’t want your sort. Get away!”

And to illustrate his point he starts to throw stones at me. Big ones, small ones, sharp ones, they just keep on raining down. I have no choice to retreat but don’t know what now to do.

The gate is barred to me and I am lost and so alone.
