Balance Beam

As a young girl I would spend hours walking back and forth on a plank of wood. A friend of my fathers had created it for me. The maple wood had strands of amber and caramel; like a piece of art. When I became overwhelmed I would seek refuge on the beam. Spending hours walking carefully on the six inch plank.

In retrospect, it was a bit of a moving meditation. The beam has since become a symbol of concentration and determination for me. A challenge one can never perfect; but must persist with. The man who crafted this gift died a few years later; by his own doing. He never had a family of his own but treated us as if we were. The gift was not the piece of wood but the time and thought behind its creation.
