Roses Are Dead

Someone handed me roses

a bunch,

a bouquet.

I’d done a favour for a neighbour,

a ‘Thank You’

so to say.

As soon as they were in my hand,

those blooms

fell in to shade;

it was not my imagining

that they

began to fade.

It took less than a minute

for those roses

to be dead.

They did not want to live near me,

they’d rather die,

they said.

The thorns, they became sharper,

piercing through

my skin,

allowing all my blood to flow

to outside

from within.

The petals dried, began to fall,

they crumpled

in to dust.

A fatality they could not resist

along with all

my trust.
