“Cover Story”

He knew she

was lying

as soon as

she said it,

“out with the

girls

for drinks

after work”

wasn’t going

to fly

in the cramped

air space

between them,

he wasn’t in

a hurry

letting her

continue on

stating various

facts

about herself

and last night’s

actives

all of which

he knew

weren’t true,

he wanted to

slam the door

Hard

into her face

when he

paraded

the truth

out in front

of her

trapping herself

in a cage

with her own

words

unable to

talk her way

out of this

one

forcing her

to turn around

and walk in

a whole new

direction,

her overly

obvious smile

never fading

as she speaks

to him

her eyes

making a

conscious

effort

to catch his

eyes

and not break

contact

no need to

nervously

look away

when she spoke

the less

believable

words of deceit

her story was

so well planned

out

no gaps

she’s afraid

she could get

herself

stuck in,

he analyzed

every word

she said

from the start

of her little

lie

setting them

aside

for later

putting together

an attack

for when he’s

ready to

send those

words

flying back

at her,

he had been

following her

eyes

waiting for the

deception

to show in

them

when his

concentration

started to waiver

he was starting

to see the

finality

in his plan

as he studied

her,

watching as

she polishes

some of the

weaker points

of her story

to help them

slip by

his casual

interrogation

hoping to

get them

through

without any

counter questions

being fired

back at her

that she would

have to

strongly

deny,

she takes a

step closer

as she dangles

a checkable

fact

before him

feeling confident

in her game

grabbing his

arm

as she says

“you won’t believe

what Tina did

last night

it was so

funny”

that touch of

her hand

sends fear

through

his body

her smile

blinding his

hate

wanting now

to abort

his well

thought out

plan

flipping the

failsafe switch

on the

conversation

before she says

something

he knows

she can’t

defend

cornering herself

into admitting

her whole

fabrication

was a lie

putting their

relationship

on fatal ground

“tell me tomorrow”

he says

to her

with a trusting

smile

shutting down

all her

misinformation

before she

verbally trips

and takes her

whole story

down

with her

then adding a

“I’m glad you

had fun with

the girls”

to show her

he bought the

whole presentation

she had laid

out

in front of

him,

she gives him

a hug

with a dart

of a kiss

to his cheek

letting him

know

she appreciates

that acceptance

giving him

a feeling

he knows

that is

nowhere

close to

love,

a girl’s night

out

without any

girls

he thinks to

himself

a story

he can prove

is a lie

but has

decided

he won’t be

exposing

all the facts,

he’ll keep

her words

tied up

and held

hostage

never letting

them out

into the

light

of the

truth,

this little

lie

is theirs

now

something

they can

share

together…
