A poem set during a war about a couple separated by the conflict.

I remember your smile,
That would bleed across your face
And leave charming marks
Upon your cheeks.

I remember the winter sky,
One that's now hidden
By weaponous smoke consisting of
A mustard-coloured tint.

I remember your expressions,
Being so bright and vivid
Before being betrayed by
The duty to your country.

I remember cold and dark nights,
With blackened limbs in blankets
Of dirt and coupled with
A friendly frostbite.

I remember your laughable bravado,
The one that won me over
After many battles
Between our two sides.

I remember my time away from home,
Always spent alone and withering
As I waited
For a joyous finale.

I remember your promise to me,
One where you'd be safe,
Sound and forever loving
To me.

I remember flashes,
With limbs being scattered sporadically
And the lives of innocent men
Being torn to shreds.

I remember when you died for our country.
I remember when I died for you.
