full of black blood

of writers past present and future

yearning to be put to page

as those of Angelou:

"there is no greater glory than

bearing an untold story"

consider the pen

implement deceptively small

filling empty sheets with hope

beyond wars of guns and bombs

spilling words that change hearts

words that create meaning

words that give warning

as those of Bradbury:

"you don’t have to burn books

to destroy culture

just get people to stop reading"

consider the pen

put in the right hand

it can transform

change the collective consciousness

expose and dispose of hypocrisy

freedom by stroke of ballpoint

justice at the tip of a fountain

to paraphrase Dr. King:

"the ultimate measure of a (writer)

is not where he stands in moments of comfort

but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy"

consider the pen

its opposite power

to oppress through ominous signature

taint innocent pages

with hate and violence

strike at the defenseless the powerless

with ridiculous rhetoric

vain attempts to subjugate

through multi mass social media madness

trumped up statements

filled with layers of lies

consider taking that pen

wielding it like a righteous sword

pressing your voice onto paper

bold lines of courage

lines that refuse to submit

lines that refuse to back down

lines that refuse to quit

always remember the pen

everything it has done for humanity

and everything it will continue to do
