I keep staring str8 ahead
or slightly to my right
I'm at the back of the bus
where the wild, unruly ones sit
or at least that is what they used to tell me
I sit here because I can make a difference
clearly he is homeless
disheveled & reeking of body odour
he arrived with a winter coat wrapped tightly around him
it's now been removed & he sits shirtless
he probably hasn't had a shower in awhile
that's okay
when I reach my stop, this will pass
let me take the 45 minute bus ride
to show him people really do care
some sitting close lean the other way
they lean cuz they're afraid of the stranger with no shirt
for a long time there was an empty seat between us
now in stark contrast another body has appeared
a Muslim woman squeezes in between us
I turn to her and smile
she knows from the look in my eye, that I am here for her
people get off, new people get on
seats are shuffled
the bus is preparing to depart for the next stop
and then he's gone
he grabs his coat & leaves via the back door
into the concrete jungle
to try and survive another day
