Chicken!

It had always been agreed that the chickens would not be pets. They had a large area to wander freely in, were fed top-grade feed. Their eggs were gathered, to be either eaten or sold.

You know it’s time we got rid of one of them,” Maureen said.

I know,” Peter said. “So who’s going to do it, then?”

What do you mean? You’re the man of the house!”

Peter walked outside and looked at the hens. They all came walking up towards him, expecting food, totally trusting. He couldn’t do it. Could not even bear the thought of slaughtering even one of the fowl.

No, he’d not do it. But they would still have chicken. He’d head off to the store, buy one; Maureen need never know.

It wasn’t far. He’d walk, leave the car. After all, his wife would hardly be expecting it to take seconds, would she.

At the store he tried to find a chicken about the same size as one of the hens at home. Bird picked, he headed back home and passed it to his wife.

You couldn’t do it, could you!” she said.

Peter shook his head. “But how did you know?”

Well, when you kill them they don’t come wrapped and labelled! I’ll just get this in the oven and then we’ll pop out and check on our ‘girls’, shall we?”

Peter nodded. “I think that would be an excellent idea!”
