In the ocean

alone

I found momentarily

swimming along

an animal

 eating dirty eyeballs

 crunching upon them like

gritty sand.

I swam blindly

up and over

breaking the eddy

and asked

"Hey, what are you doing

to my eyes?

Those are mine!"

And, it replied

slurping with a smile,

"They are horrible,

I thought they would taste

much more beautiful."

Then it spat them out

into its hands

offering them back to me

swimming away.

I explained,

"I have only seen disgusting things,

though, my soul remains

full of love

despite it all;"

and tried to put them back in

with salt water burning.

In the ocean

swam an animal,

eating my soul.

I know exactly how it tastes

for its eyes reveal

what I had held onto

for much too long

underneath

floating

swimming away eternally.
