When a Woman Walks

They say her footsteps should be feathers.

Quiet, inconspicuous.

Don't tip the balance in her favor

With earthquakes in her feet.

Quiet, inconspicuous,

Her voice should melt into the atmosphere.

With earthquakes in her feet,

She will send walls tumbling into the sea

Her voice should melt into the atmosphere.

Even if she hears the wolves from miles away,

She will send walls tumbling into the sea

For she is clairvoyant.

Even if she hears wolves from miles away,

The park rangers ignore her,

For she is clairvoyant

And she must prepare her iron skin for battle

The park rangers ignore her.

They choose to believe wolves in sheep's clothing

And she must prepare her iron skin for battle

Because the pasture gates have been left unsupervised.

They choose to believe wolves in sheep's clothing,

So she will march in stilettos made of butcher knives.

Because the pasture gates have been left unsupervised,

She must be a locksmith

So she will march in stilettos made of butcher knives

And leave permanent tracks in the pavement.

She must be a locksmith

When she reaches her lonely car.
