Recently, there has been some controversy surrounding a Twitch Streamer by the nickname “Ninja”. This controversy started when he said he didn’t want to play with females streamers due to the fact it may cause controversy and cause a ripple in his stable marriage with his wife.

Here’s his comment:

  1. “I don’t play with female streamers”
  2. “If I have one conversation with one female streamer where we’re playing with one another, and even if there’s a hint of flirting, that is going to be taken and going to be put on every single video and be clickbait forever”
  3. “[Not being connected to other women online], that was something I made 100-percent sure.”
  4. “That was not even her. She had nothing to do with it. That was me being, ‘I love our relationship,’ and, ‘No?—?I’m not even going to put you through that..”
  5. “There hasn’t been a single female gamer or streamer on Twitch or anything like that who’s been upset with that.”
  6. “I honestly think that […] it’s just kinda like a respect thing.”
  7. “The only way to avoid that [gossip] is to not play with them at all.”

I shall go through this video and assess whether this action by Ninja to say he doesn’t want to work with female streamers is wrong, right and sexist. When we have done that, we shall then try to evaluate his statement and see how valid it is.

So, first, we are going to analyse whether this action by Ninja is sexist.

So what is sexism?

According to https://www.dictionary.com/browse/sexism

  1. attitudes or behavior based on traditional stereotypes of gender roles.
  2. discrimination or devaluation based on a person’s sex or gender, as in restricted job opportunities, especially such discrimination directed against women.
  3. ingrained and institutionalized prejudice against or hatred of women; misogyny.

So, from Ninja statement, I don’t believe his comments refer to any traditional stereotypes of gender roles, so we can exclude Number 1 and Number 3 has nothing to do with the individual and more to do with the law and policies that are in place.

Number 2 on the other hand does play a role and can determine whether Ninja statement is sexist.

The definition says it is discrimination or devaluation based on a person’s sex or gender.

I don’t believe it is devaluation but I believe it is discrimination, and for us to now analyse the discriminatory elements in his statement, we need the definition.

What is discrimination:

According to https://www.dictionary.com/browse/discrimination?s=t

  1. an act or instance of discriminating, or of making a distinction.
  2. treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit: racial and religious intolerance and discrimination.
  3. the power of making fine distinctions; discriminating judgment:

For now we shall ignore number 1 and 3 as it is important, but it is not easy to make a case for it whereas Number 2 is easier to use as a definition.

Number 2 states that, if you treat a specific group, class or category of people in a way that favors or is against them, that is discriminatory. And if it is discriminatory, it can therefore be sexist.

Ninja is saying, “He doesn’t want to play with female streamers.”

Through that statement, he has identified a category of people, which is “female streamers.” That categorization has been connected with the action of not playing with them. This is discriminatory because he is in favor of not playing with female streamers and is against playing with them.

So to come to a conclusion, Ninja’s statement is discriminatory and therefore sexist.

Now, to assess whether his statement is good or bad.

Conclusion:

I believe it is both, because he is negatively treating a specific group of people but he is doing it so that his marriage will be secured.

Now, to assess his various comments and see whether they are valid or not.

  1. “I don’t play with female streamers”

This has been assessed as good or bad.

  1. “If I have one conversation with one female streamer where we’re playing with one another, and even if there’s a hint of flirting, that is going to be taken and going to be put on every single video and be clickbait forever”

This is valid as this is possible, but to then go and discriminate female streamers because of a scenario is stupid as this can be done with ANYBODY. This can literally be done with a joke, a statement, an action, ANYTHING can be taken OUT OF CONTEXT. So this means he should never play with ANYBODY but Ninja does play with others so this excuse isn’t that valid and this is also why he could fit Number 1 and Number 3 on the definition of discrimination.

This is because he is making the distinction that female streamers can only be accused of flirting with him and male streamers cannot. Even though accusations can be made for both.

  1. “[Not being connected to other women online], that was something I made 100-percent sure.”

This is his choice to do so but this is basic paranoia in my opinions. So this statement is valid, but it doesn’t make logical sense as you will always be connected to women online since you live in a world that’s filled with women.

  1. “That was not even her. She had nothing to do with it. That was me being, ‘I love our relationship,’ and, ‘No?—?I’m not even going to put you through that..”

This statement isn’t valid as your female partner should be able to realize she is not the only women in existence and thus, should accept that you should be willing to interact with other females and if she truly loves the relationship, she should be knowing of you to trust you first and make judgement based on hard facts.

  1. “There hasn’t been a single female gamer or streamer on Twitch or anything like that who’s been upset with that.”

Where did he get this from? This is very invalid as I am very sure he doesn’t know all the female gamer and streamers on Twitch or anything like the platform.

  1. “I honestly think that […] it’s just kinda like a respect thing.”

Respect is such a poor excuse as if your wife respects your loyalty, why can’t you interact with females? This is valid in the sense, he is respecting his wife but, it’s hard for me to digest but once again, validity can be applied to this comment.

  1. “The only way to avoid that [gossip] is to not play with them at all.”

Let me rephrase this

“The only way to avoid that [thug culture] is to imprison all black men”

Of course there will be exceptions when you do things, not everybody and not every scenario will be the same. But, this comment is valid as, getting rid of it 100% will stop a scenario but it’s so dismissive of other people’s feelings and only wanting your own to be 100% safe.

So in conclusion, Ninja statement was sexist, wrong and right.
