In the basement where everyone met, Cove slapped his plastic baton dramatically against the board. “Now. Ladies and gentlemen, your attention please!”

“Oh god.” This was Emery

“Not again.” Summer.

“Remind me again, why we put up with you?” Reed’s comment was the most popular.

“You put up with me because I’m just too irresistible. Isn’t that right, Dawn?”

“Yeah…no.” She rolled her eyes to the side and crossed her arms to uproarious laughter.

“See, Cove? Even sweet Dawn can’t agree with that.”

“Oh shut up, Em!” Cove was laughing, too. “I mean, I may be me - but at least I never tried to make a girlfriend on a computer like you did!”

“Hey!” By now, everyone was clutching at their sides. They had all been together since middle school, and the Cove-versus-Emery squabbles had never lost their charm. Despite the bickering though, they were all joined at the hip.

“But enough with the chatter. The real reason for the meeting….is this!” Cove turned and extended his arm so his baton was pointed directly at Summer and Reed where they were on the couch…making out. Emery helpfully gave Reed a smack over the head.

“What the-”

“Hello, Reed!”

“Hi…Emery?”

“So you see, this is a very serious matter to discus.” Cove looked around the room, stopping his gaze on Dawn. “Dawn!”

She started slightly. “Yes?”

“Do you believe that Summer and Reed should be indecorously advertising their relationship status in these group settings?”

“Uh…I don’t know. I don’t really mind either way.”

Cove nodded vigorously. “Yes! I’ll put you down as a ‘No’ then. Next!” He turned his gaze (and baton) to Emery. “Emery!”

“Sir yes, sir!”

“Do you believe that Summer and Reed should be indecorously advertising their relationship status in these group settings?”

“No sir, no! It is an offense to the rest of us, general!”

“Well said, private. Well said! Now, for the final statement…” Cove turned to the couple, placing his hands out in front of him. “Reed and Summer. Summer and Reed. I must ask that you refrain from excessive PDA when the group is grouping.”

Reed scoffed. “Why? Dude, it’s August!”

“Meaning?” This came from Emery, who had now been promoted to Lieutenant.

“Meaning,” this was stretched out, “that me and Summer don’t have much more time to do this. I mean, once school starts we can’t do this in the building, and due to homework we won’t be able to meet much outside of classes either. Can’t you guys just let us be for the last couple of weeks?”

“We could…” Cove leaned against the wall and tapped the baton against his leg thoughtfully. “But the problem is, the same things apply to us hanging out as a group. These last couple weeks of August, we have big plans to do stuff before we have to split.”

Emery added, “And you two are always too busy sucking face to be with us!”

“So it comes to this…” Cove announced gravely. “the couple, or the group?”
