A Kind Word

"I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." — Maya Angelou

I have tried to use this phrase as a mantra for my interactions and teaching. I was raised in a time when criticism was used as a form of a misguided incentive to increase performance. As an adult I have rejected this premise. I have chosen to use supportive language to motivate my students who experience extreme challenges each and every day.

Yes, I think it is a choice! Every word we use is a chance to encourage or belittle one another. It does not matter what position you hold; you are ultimately responsible. The words we choose are decisions to indulge or encourage.The results are cumulative and the impact remains long after the discussion has completed. I long for a simpler day and a kinder word.
