Look at the eight story buildings

or the bars on the windows

and breathe in and smell

the scent of loss in the air.

Or open your eyes to the tumbleweeds,

made of lost dreams and hair stolen from horses,

or the elevators, bleached with piss –

They are all here to remind you that this is not heaven

but a hell filled with dissonant laughter

and love affairs with 50-cent sodas.

Sirens go on nonstop ‘til sunrise

and no one truly makes it out

even the dead

their blood is stained in the streets.

No matter how hard you scrub,

they’ll never be free.
