What’s in a name?

One of the few things I like about myself is my name. It seems to match my manner; or maybe I have just grown into the label. I have amended it over time. With the addition of partners and changes of state. My son has done the same. He once told me that he has no attachment to his last name because his father was absent and his step father just a distant memory. If there is no connection to the name should one continue to use it?

In our family, the girls share a middle name as some form of legacy. My son was given his name based on the attributes of a friend I had as a child. A person who was bright, curious and determined. My son shares these qualities; even though he has never met his namesake. Soon he will share his name with his fiancé and in some years perhaps his children. He has become the type of person one wants to share a name with. He knows all too well the difference between a name one is proud to carry and a label one is assigned.
