The Morrigan And The Rose

She stood there under greying skies,

her cloak wrapped round her tight,

fashioned from ravens feathers

in it she made a curious sight.

She took a breath, threw back her head,

she issued forth a call

the sky then filled with those black birds;

crows and ravens one and all.

They settled all around her, on tree, upon the ground,

waiting for her orders to be uttered.

The Morrigan, her thoughts they read

and in to the air they fluttered.

They swooped across the sky en masse,

a murder of a cloud,

the number that had answered her

had really done her proud.

The roses never stood a chance against

all the crows, the rooks;

all the life they stole from them,

the reddened glow they took.

Returning to their mistress,

the air thrumming with their cries;

she could not feel but victorious

when she pictured the Queen’s surprise.

Her roses, once her pride and joy,

all petals they had now shed

for her murderous army

had attacked and left them dead.

But the Morrigan was not heartless;

where her army goes,

she’ll always leave her calling card,

one single coal black rose.
