Authentic Italian

For many years, I have avoided social gatherings. For me, the anxiety I experience often negates the potential joy of any given moment. With the support of a therapist, I decided to venture out and spend the evening with white wine and the dry wit of my relations.

We engaged in the rituals of disjointed conversation; which happens with gatherings of people we care for but rarely see. Somewhere between the minestrone and mussels; we took photos of our evening. A keepsake to recall those who have travelled great distances to be in this moment.

We masterfully avoided topics of politics and finance choosing to speak of theatre and fine arts instead; always a safe bet. We raised our glasses to toast those who were present and to honor those who had passed. The meal was delicious and the smiles authentic.
