“Girl’s Bathroom Stall”

She sat in

the stall

of the

high school

bathroom

trying to

remember

the life she

use to have

as an unnoticed

wide eyed

freshmen

girl

able to wear

mismatching

clothes

and hang out

with whoever

she wanted

most of her

friends

back then

she had

since

childhood

now she rarely

even gives them

a wave

or a nod

when they pass

in the halls,

she knows

she has

changed

becoming a

completely

different

person

then the one

she use

to be

but who she

is now

need only

drop

a text

that she’s

bored

and the Hottest

guys

and Coolest

girls

will be lining

up options

for her to

choose from

each hoping

it’s theirs

that she

decides

to pick,

she looks at

the various

markings

on the bathroom

stall walls

left behind

by her fellow

students

a couple of

which

are quite funny

but mostly just

gross

along with a

picture

that was made

with a fine point

Sharpie

that she’s not

so sure

she wants to

know

what it’s all

about,

she wants to

say

she wishes

things

never changed

comfortably

lost in the

crowd

with that same

select group of

friends

as she walks

between classes

but she likes

being noticed

being seen in

the light of

popularity

getting invited

to all the

limited access

parties

people listening

to her

when she speaks

and asking about

her look

as she goes

by

one that she

has put in

a lot of time

to cultivate,

but on certain

days

the weight

that it carries

seems to suffocate

her

bringing her

back

to fifteen

this bathroom

stall

and a simpler

world,

she pulls a

short length

of tissue paper

off the securely

encased roll

on the wall

and folds it

into a neat

square

then pats her

damp eyes

it wouldn’t be

right

for a Varsity

Cheerleader

to be caught

crying

then she stands

up

drops the

tissue

into the bowl

and flushes

her tears

away

she opens the

stall door

checking her

eyes

as she washes

her hands

before standing

in front of

the large

bathroom

mirror

checking the

package

she’s presenting

today

the tailored cut

of her tight

fitting

Varsity whites

hug her body

accenting the

lines

that draw her

the looks

when she walks

down

the high school

halls

she gives the

mirror

a little smile

flashing her

teeth

that are framed

by her perfect

tan

as if posing

for a cheer,

she’s happy

with the well

manicured

reflection

she gets back

so she

takes a deep

breath

keeps on the

smile

and heads off

late

to class…
