RAYMOND CRANE ON PLOTTING

I usually start with a prompt – a catchy inspiring title – a character I wish to portray or some series of incidents. The initial idea is compellingly motivating to the extent that within a couple of days I have outlined the major themes, the major story-line and just what creature I am to deal with. In the past I have done little research, it is usually a topic, character and setting with which I am very familiar. If I accept a major challenge such as creating or writing in a style new to me or if in fact I intend to dress up my story in clothes unfamiliar to myself, I need to do research; such as I did for, - Palma de Mallorca Mystique, where I investigated in depth my knowledge as reflected on the internet concerning such factors as architypes, stereotypes and the layout or physical attitudes of Palma and the island of Mallorca.

I intend in all my future writings to involve myself in, in-depth research to the extent that I can actually grow and learn from the writing experience, more than just filling in territory of which I already know from my own previous life experience. In this way what was first an adventure involving me with myself and my innate knowledge of the world as I know it, or see it from a subjective view of our life, I shall now be venturing into unknown worlds, not to say, I intend to write fantasies, although as my imagination takes hold of the initial premise, idea or prompt I shall fall under the spell as will my audience – of something completely new, unprecedented and a total challenge to us all, relieving us all of the tedium of mere genre writing.

This being said, Romance shall remain my main focus and the main motivation for presenting my readers with adventures that have never before been imagined. Expect the unexpected!

Thanx from Raymond Crane
