Summer breathing; summer thinking

Inhale

Air hot and heavy

Dense and smothering

My thirsty lungs

With the bodies of burning forests

Miles away

Exhale

Warmth unwavering

Akin to the excited source

Of brazen incineration

My cells linger

Unquenched

Inhale

Throat scratched and dry

Sickly sky

Coated in a queasy

Yellow haze

So thick that

Enticed eyes can stare

Straight into the sun

Unfazed

Exhale

Our valley observed is

Like a lake floor disturbed:

Entirely enclosed

In an opaque cloud

For which only time

Will allow to settle

Inhale

Do I have a right

To deem uninvited

Such airless air?

Hungry with desire

And heedless

In our power

Did my kind not, in a way,

Pour petrol to this fire?

Exhale

My chest can’t shake the weight

Creeping with

A sense of culpability

For a rightfully angered Earth

Who cries for change

Through discomfort

To which she hopes

We do not deafen
