  One Last Dream

I couldn’t resist coughing those days. I was coughing up blood. I had night sweats too. I didn’t want to consult a doctor until it lasted long for weeks. I was subjected to skin tests, blood tests, X-rays and the doctor diagnosed it as Tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis, often abbreviated as TB is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Mycobaterium tuberculosis. These are widespread organisms typically living in water (including tap water with chlorine) and food sources. But the ones which causes TB are often seen as obligate parasites.

The bacteria had approached me like a fake friend. At first, when it infected my body, my body destroyed it. Later, my body itself developed a latent TB which was asymptomatic as it took a long period of time for the bacteria to grow inside my body. Then, later it caused an immediate sickness. Latent TB got activated and active TB was contagious.

Signs and symptoms of Active TB include coughing (3 or more weeks), coughing up blood, chest pain or pain with breathing/coughing, unintentional weight loss, fatigue, fever, night sweats, chill, loss of appetite.

After the diagnosis doctor made me aware of the transmission of this disease. TB is transmitted very slowly. It takes a period of time like nearly a day to transmit it from one person to another. So chances are that it may often spread to our co-workers, friends and family members.

TB spreads due to coughs, sneeze, talks etc. Air is the medium of transmission. It can spread through

mucus or saliva. The infection reaches lungs, specifically the alveoli. Then it reaches the lymphatic system, blood stream and spreads to organs with high oxygen pressure such as lungs, kidney, bone marrow, membrane coverings of brain and spinal cord known as meninge.

I was an alcoholic. But TB suppressed me from taking it as it was a further high risk of TB itself. As per the doctor’s direction I was subjected to ELISA and made sure that I was HIV –ve.

Risk factors of TB include alcoholism, IV drug abuse, poor living conditions, low body weight, diseases like AIDs. TB is known to be a leading cause of death in HIV patients.

The doctor had advised me to take a lot of drugs. I thought to myself that failure was better than regret and  prevention was better than cure.

First line drugs for TB include Isoniazid, F’Fampin, Ethambutol, Pyrazinamide. Preventive vaccine for TB is Bacillus Calmette Guerin (BCG) vaccine.

Taking antibiotics I felt better after a week. Then, I ignored to take more drugs. I was fed up eating so much drugs all day. I was sure that TB is a curable disease. I felt extremely happy about defeating my disease. But after 2 months, I was sick again. I had immensive fever. I coughed up blood again.

It takes  almost 6 months to kill all the bacteria. It is a “must” to take all drugs for the given time to cure TB completely. If not treated properly ,our body will develop drug resistant TB. It include:

(i) Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) ,which is resistant to 2 out 4 drugs taken and

(ii) Extensively drug resistant TB (XDR-TB), which is rare and dangerous.

TB can be treated as a deadly disease in case of improper treatment, late diagnosis and co-infection with HIV.

I had ignored my medicines like anything. Today I know that death is not far from me. Writing this I have one last dream, may be a TB free world tomorrow.

1/3rd of world population are affected with TB. Of which most of them are having latent TB with no symptoms. An untreated person infects 10-15 people in a year. 2 million people die each year. TB is commonly seen in India, China ,and  several countries in Africa. 5-10% of Americans are also affected with TB. By now, about 500 million people have died out of TB.

Your habit is your destiny. It is necessary to make good steps for a healthy life your habit. Happiness is being healthy ,not being rich or popular. Remember “Laugh and the world laughs with you; weep and you weep alone”.
