As I walked quickly to my car, the tears I had been holding back streamed down my face. Rivulets of repressed regret and guilt, of sadness and longing. They etched their way all the way to my soul. This time...I knew, I had truly let him go. He deserved so much more than I had ever given him.

“Wait- I heard faintly, then louder, “WAIT!” and I saw her rush to my window.

“I need to say something.” She took a deep breath and I watched as her face crumpled into a million jagged pieces. The realization, I knew, had brought her entire world crashing down.

“I— I’ve never seen that look on his face.”

Stunned, I silently reflected on her words, then quietly asked, “What look?”

“A look like he was watching his entire heart walk out the door. What’s left for me if you are his heart?” She ended in a mere whisper.

Closing my eyes, I knew what she was really asking. How could he ever love her like he loved me? What hope did she have to ever experience what I had so foolishly thrown away?

The words burned my throat as I swallowed painfully, lodging them in the brutal truth. I forced them past the fire on my lips.

“His trust.”
