The slowest heartbreak I'll ever know,
As day after day I watch her grow.
"Daddy, watch this" or "Daddy, let's play",
Snuggles and Kisses all through the day.
*(Talk to everyone, the tiny one, not me, okay)*
Such pride in each new first she achieves,
Such innocent and beautiful things she believes.
Her tiny, gentle hands on my back when we hug,
The crazy, insane escape from a bug.
Sleepy eyes in the morning, crazy hair too,
All the silly songs and dances we do.
These clothes fit last week, but don't fit anymore,
The favorite toys, that now are a bore.
All of these things, I already miss,
I could go on and on, a forever growing list.
How can you miss something that's not even gone?
How can you lose a race that you've already won?
"They grow so fast" is what everyone said,
I know, I know......what I thought in my head.
But I didn't know then, and only now begin to see,
For only a parent knows of this that I speak.
The time goes much faster than you'd ever think,
So enjoy, pay attention, and don't you dare blink.
Because once time passes, it can never return,
And the wheels of growing continue to churn.
Soon there will be school, and homework, and friends,
Birthday parties, and sports, and ...boys? When will it end?!
And end it will, she'll have a life of her own,
Hopefully I'll see her a lot and talk on the phone.
But it'll never again be the way it is today,
Because grow she must, and find her own way.
It's the slowest heartbreak I'll ever know,
Because one day I know...I'll have to let go.
