The door to her balcony was open and the wind moved the curtains around in a peaceful manner. The air smelled like it always did in the crowded city, like smog and dust. The name Livia carved into the doorway. She gripped onto the steel railing, acting as if it was the only thing that would support her. The sunsetting in the distance should have been the perfect background for a night like the one Livia had. It wasn’t, not for any of the three years she had lived there. Her blonde hair whipped around her as the wind picked up. The traffic sounds eighteen floors below her rang through her mind, becoming clearer and clearer. She closed her grey eyes and took in the sounds she heard through her ears, the salt she tasted in the air, the rust she felt beneath her fingertips. It sounded as it did before. It tasted as it did before. It felt like it did before. The sky turned from deep blue, to purple, to a beautiful soft pink, ending in a dark gray. The cities lights quickly turned on, making the city light up and so it would be able to be seen from far away. A tear slid down the college students cheek softly. Her vision turned white. Memories from her past came back to haunt the poor girl, her verbally abusive grandmother, her neglectful mother, her hurtful brother, and her demanding father. It all hurt. The memories struck her heart heavily, adding a layer to her already strained mind. She wanted the pain to go away, to leave her and never come back. Ever since her childhood these secrets were something she never said to anyone. They added and added to her daily struggles including her depression and anxiety. She had been in the same shoes one time prior to this, thinking the same way she did now, but this time she wanted the “prize” at the end. The wind moved faster, making Livia’s dress sway and move rapidly. The lights in her apartment were turned off. Her fans for the intense heat were also off. She would have no more need for them, not where she was going. Livia longed for a castle in the clouds, one where no one else but herself would reside. She slowly opened her eyes and looked out across the highway. There in the distance on the other side was a man. He looked to be her age, sitting on the railing of the balcony of his own apartment. He looked perfect, like the one she always dreamed would rescue her. From the expression in his beautiful green eyes, she knew he felt the same for her. She wanted to feel his warmth, one of a man that wouldn’t betray her as so many had in her past. Livia longed for the peace and tranquility she knew she would feel if she was with him, not the longing for death, and her urge for suicide. She could already feel his love from their short distance apart. She reached out to him, hoping he would take her in his arms. The man got a look in his eyes, a look of sadness and distraught. He knew what she wanted and what she yearned for, but he knew it would never be. Her foot slipped. The last thing she saw before closing her eyes was his mouth forming the words, “I’ll see you there”. The next thing she knew, Livia woke up in a castle in the clouds with him next to her, holding her against his chest. She was free.
