I sat underneath the moon last night
Yearning to grasp how she shines so bright
Although she stands on her own.
I've never quite known how that is done
To be full of iridescence but to only be one.
I suppose I did know once upon a time
But I seem to have left those days somewhere far behind.
They slipped right through my fingers or the holes in my jeans
And I cannot recreate them, or at least so it seems.
Heavens, can you teach me to shine by myself?
To burn so brightly that I need no one else?
Teach me to be constant, be patient and wait
To recognize my beauty, no matter size or shape.
Appreciate the moments, fleeting as they are
Here for an instant, then falling like a star.
Teach me understanding that sometimes, stars burn out
But from their dust is new creation, new life brought about.
The universe is in me, beating, breathing, thriving
And this sense of purpose that I feel will not return to hiding.
