In the backyard among the white roses,

Made crisp by starlight and the spring evening breeze.

When the stream of the day ebbs and closes,

And the setting sun dips and dozes.

I sit with these roses, breathe in their sweet ease.

Though I know in the morning

They’ll be dripping with dew drops,

From their white silk petals in the soft dawnlight.

Precipitated in the night,

Without so much as a whisper or plop.

Where now I sit with them in their hour,

Curious of their nightly shower,

If—like mine—it comes from infinity on high?

From the vast expanse of starry sky,

That draws my eye away from flowers.
