I wrote this poem on the night of New Year’s Eve, while I stayed in a local crisis house for nearly a month in order to be stabilized.

I’m Ready

As I hear fireworks go off outside,
I also feel them within my mind.
And that, in fact, is a damn swell sign.

I’m now quite sure things will be alright
Because two weeks ago, I walked out of a fight
That's been going on for over half my life.

Exhausted then, I wanted to be done & dead.
But now, with a different diagnosis & new med,
Something has recently changed in my head.

And with close family & friends around me,
I'm starting to feel like maybe I'm free.
Another way to say it is that now, I'm ready.

I'm ready to hide behind stigma no more,
To take mental illness out of folklore,
And to tell you that I live with bipolar.
