rush through the hospital doors, ignoring people and shoving them out of the way. I smell the sting of the medicine throughout. I reach the elevator and hit the the 8 level button. I also hit the close doors button so no one else can get in. Surprisingly it took me all the up without stopping. The elevators ding and and the doors slowly open. I walk quickly to room 840. Ben is standing outside the room with his arms crossed. He looks upset. He should be. He sees me and his look turns from upset to anger. I reach him and try to to just push past him. HE stops me, putting his hand on my shoulder.

“You shouldn't be here,” he says, “Leave.” I shrug him off and open the door closing the door behind. I hear him sigh, but he lets me go. I turn and see her. Hooked to machines that beeping and already driving me crazy. Amy sits up and sees me and breaks out into a smile. I can't help but smile back even seeing her like this.

“Hey you.” She sits up further. “Hey yourself.” I say as i walk over to her bed. I see the tubes hooked to the machines that connect to her.

“I'm really glad you came.” She speaks her voice, cracking. I turn. I can't bear to her like this. My mind flashes back to that day in the rain. The black suits. The casket. I turn back to her.

“Why did you call me here?” I shake my head. “Why?”

“Because i wanted to see you,” she sits up further, “And because I have something to tell you.”

“How long?” I demand.

“The doctors don’t know,” she speaks softly, “They think maybe a month, maybe more, maybe less. That's why I had to see you one more time.” I walk away. I can’t do this. A month. How can I….

“Why am I here? I ask again.

“I told you-”

“NO!” I yell. “Why?”

“Because you needed to know, after everything after Courtney….”she trails off. Tears well up in my eyes. My mind flashes back. The priest speaking over her. Over my….

“So you think after what I told. After what I confessed to you? That this was a good idea?” I turn back around to face her and see that’s she’s crying.

“You think I stopped being in love in with you?” I say tears starting to come down my face too.

“No!” she sobs.

“I’m leaving” I start towards the door.

“No!’’ She's still crying.

“THEN WHAT?!?” I start bawling too. “I CAN’T WATCH…..I CAN’T WATCH SOMEONE ELSE I LOVE DIE!!!!!” The door bursts open and Ben rushes in.

“Whats going on?” he scans the room.

“Nothing Ben,” I say, “i was just leaving.”

“And don’t come back” Ben shakes his head.

“I don’t plan on it” I’m almost to the door.

“She doesn't feel the same way and you know that. So stay gone! YOu claim to care about her and where were you when she first got sick?! Nowhere! I was there!” Ben calls after me.

“You son of a bitch!!” I yell, “You knew exactly where i was! I was mourning the death of my daughter!!”

“How convenient!” He turns back to Amy whos still crying. Without thinking I rush him. I pin him to the ground and start punching. I hear a crack as his nose breaks but I don’t stop.

“I loved her and I wanted be there! But I couldn't!” I keep punching. My hands are covered in blood and tears. I feel someone yelling stop and feel someone trying to pull me off. I swing wildly back. I a cry of pain and stop. It was Amy who had hobbled out of bed to stop me. I had hit the woman i love. I get up.

“I’m sorry.” I say as I walk out the door my hands still covered in blood and tears still streaming down my face.

“Nick!” I hear. I don’t look back.
