THIS ESSAY IS A PHILOSOPHICAL-BASED OPINION THAT SPEAKS ABOUT HOW A LOVER SHOULD LOVE THE BELOVED.

WHAT IS LOVE? A LOT OF PEOPLE NOWADAYS OFTENLY ASK THEMSELVES WHAT LOVE IS. UNFORETUNATELY, MOST OF THE TIME, IF THEY ENDED UP NOT KNOWING THE GENUINE DEFINITION OF IT, THEY WILL DEFINITELY ASK SOMEONE, LIKE- A CLOSE FRIEND, A FAMILY MEMBER, A TEACHER, OR EVEN A STRANGER ONE. BUT, HAVE YOU EVER TRIED TO ASK YOURSELF PERSONALLY WHAT FOR YOU SHOULD BE THE REAL DEFINITION OF LOVE AND BELIEVE ON IT? THIS PHILOSPHICAL ENDEAVOR LEADS TO WHAT LOVE IS AND HOW IT IS PARTIALLY-INDIVIDUALLY DEFINED THAT CAUSED INTO A SELF-CENTEREDNESS OF A PERSON.

TO BEGIN WITH, FIRST, LET US BE REMINDED THAT THE SCOPE OF THIS ESSAY WILL REVOLVE ONLY AROUND THESE THREE KINDS OF PHILOSOPHICAL CONCEPTS OF LOVE; EROTIC LOVE, FILIAL LOVE, AND AGAPE LOVE. SECONDLY, THE LIMITATION OF THIS ESSAY WILL ONLY BE GROUNDED BY THESE THREE INNATE ABILITIES OF A HUMAN PERSON. HUMAN PERSON IS THE SUBJECT OF THIS ESSAY SINCE HUMAN PERSON CAN ONLY LOVE AND DEFINE IT IN VARIOUS WAYS. HOWEVER, DO THEY REALLY KNOW THE DEEPER MEANING OF IT? AND HOW IT IS DIFFER WITH SOME OTHER NOTION OF LOVE?


IN RELATION TO THIS NOTION OF LOVE, THERE WERE SOME ANCIENT PHILOSOPHERS WHO WERE ASKED AND GIVEN THEIR PHILOSOPHICAL DEFINITIONS OF WHAT LOVE IS. SOME OF THEM WERE THE FAMOUS ANCIENT PHILOSOPHER PLATO. PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE IN MIND FIRST WHAT IS THE TELOS (A GREEK WORD FOR END OR THE PURPOSE) OF PLATO WHY DID HE DISCUSS THE NOTION OF LOVE IN ORDER FOR HIM TO BE UNDERSTOOD BY HIS READERS. FOR PLATO THE PURPOSE OF HUMAN EXISTENCE IS TO BE UNITED WITH THE REALITY AND MOST ESPECIALLY WITH THE DIVINE. PLATO DISSCUSSED IT THIS WAY. HE HAS THESE TWO WORLDS. THE WORLD OF MATERIAL AND THE WORLD OF IMMATERIAL. ON ONE HAND, THE WORLD OF MATERIAL REFERS TO THE WORLD OF MATTER. ON THE OTHER HAND, THE WORLD OF IMMATERIAL REFERS TO THE WORLD OF FORMS. TO BETTER UNDERTAND THESE TWO WORLDS, PLATO GIVEN US A SHORT STORY THAT WAS WRITTEN ON THE BOOK “THE REPUBLIC.”

 

ACCORDING TO PLATO THERE WERE PRISONERS WHO WERE IMPRISONED SINCE BIRTH INSIDE OF A CAVE WHEREIN THEY ONLY SEE SHADOWS WHICH ARE THE REFLECTIONS OF THE PEOPLE TOGETHER WITH THEIR THINGS BEHIND THEM. THESE PRISONERS WERE SECURELY LOCKED WITH A LOT OF SHUCKLES WHICH ARE SUFFICIENT FOR THEM NOT TO MOVE FREELY TO SEE THE THINGS AROUND. IN FACT, THEY DO NOT HAVE AN ABILITY TO GET OUT FROM THE CAVE AND SEE ALL THE THINGS OUTSIDE OF IT.

 

HAVING SAID ALL OF THESE, PLATO WANTS US TO REALIZE THAT THE WORLD OF MATTER IS REFERRING TO THE SHADOWS THAT PRISONERS CAN SEE INSIDE OF THE CAVE AND THINK THAT THESE ARE THE REALITIES, WHILE WORLD OF FORM IS REFFERRING TO THE REAL THINGS- LIKE THE THINGS THAT CAUSE SHADOWS, AND MOST ESPECIALLY, THE THINGS OUTSIDE OF THE CAVE. IN ADDITION, THE WORLD OF MATTER REFERS TO THE VISIBLE THINGS, WHILE WORLD OF FORM REFERS TO THE INVISIBLE THINGS LIKE IDEAS AND CONCEPTS

IN RELATION TO THIS SHORT BACKGROUND OF PHILOSOPHICAL NOTION OF PLATO ABOUT REALITIES, ONE WILL HAVE NOW AN IDEA OF WHAT THEN LOVE IS. FOR PLATO LOVE IS NOT MATERIAL. IT DOES NOT RELY ON THE VISIBLE THINGS. LOVE SHOULD BE DEFINED IN ITS IMMATERIALITY. IT SHOULD BE DEFINED BASED NOT ON THE SHADOWS ONLY, BUT ON THE REALITIES THAT CANNOT BE SEEN BY THE VISIBLE EYES OF A HUMAN PERSON. LOVE SHOULD BE GROUNDED BY THE TRANCENDENTALITY OF LOVE, SINCE FOR HIM, LOVE IS NOT MATERIAL.

FURTHERMORE, TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THIS ASSERTION, PLATO IN HIS OTHER BOOK SYMPOSIUM, HE DISCUSSED THE MEANING OF LOVE THROUGH DIALOGUE. PLATO IS MORE CONCERN ON THE WORLD OF FORMS SINCE HE BELIEVED THAT GODS ARE PURE FORMS WHO HAVE NO BODIES AND HAVE THE OMNIPOTENCE OVER THINGS WHICH ARE VISIBLE IN THE EYES OF THE HUMANS. IN THE BOOK, THE DIALOGUE OF SOCRATES AND DIOTIMA EXTRACTED THE MEANING OF LOVE. HE SAID THAT THE CORRECT WAY OF LOVING IN HUMAN LEVEL SHOULD BE IN RELATION ALWAYS WITH THE GODS. IN OTHER WORDS, LOVE SHOULD BE DEFINED THROUGH THE LENSES OF THE DIVINE AND PUTTING ONE’S MIND FOR THE LOVE OF THE DIVINE BY DOING GOOD THINGS TO YOUR BELOVED. WHEN THE LOVER REPEATEADLY DOES IT, PLATO CALLS IT VIRTUES. THUS, FOR PLATO THE TELOS IS LOVING THE PERSON NOT ON THE LEVEL OF WHAT CAN BE SEEN BY THE NAKED EYS BUT ON THE WAY GOD LOOK AT IT AND ALWAYS BE IN RELATION TO THE DIVINE LOVE.

SECOND ANCIENT PHILOSOPHER THAT SHOULD BE COMMENDED OF, IS NO OTHER THAT ARISTOTLE. HE IS WELL KNOW IN MANY LITERARY WORKS. MOST OF THE PHILOSOPHERS MADE HIM AN INSPIRATION FOR THEM TO MAKE A LOT OF PHILOSOPHICAL WORKS. IN HIS BOOK “NICOMACHEAN ETHICS,” PLATO DISCUSSED THERE THAT “VIRTUE IS VERY ESSENTIAL IN PURSUING HAPPINESS.” WHEN IT COMES TO LOVE, SOMEONE HAS TO LOVE FIRST HIMSELF IN ORDER FOR HIM TO LOVE OTHERS. ARISTOLE MADE IT CLEAR THAT WHAT HE MEANT BY LOVING FIRST HIMSELF IS NOT A SELFISH WAY AS HOW IT IS DEFINED IN THE MODERN ERA. LOVING ONE-SELF WILL LEAD A PERSON TO KNOW THE VALUE OF LOVE SO THAT WHEN A PERSON ALREADY KNEW THE VALUE OF IT, IT IS NOW THEN HE CAN SHARE THAT LOVE UNTO HIS LOVER. WHEN THE LOVER FAILS TO KNOW, WHAT IS THE VALUE OF LOVE, BUT STILL TRIES TO LOVE, THERE IS A BIG POSSIBILITY THAT THE LOVE HE IS OFFERRING MAY LEAD INTO SELFISHNESS. THAT SELFISNESS WOULD GREATLY AFFECT THE COMMUNITY AND CAUSE DIFFERENT KINDS OF IMMORALITIES.

NOW, WHAT THEN IS LOVE? AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS ESSAY, IT WAS SAID THAT THERE ARE THREE KINDS OF LOVE. THESE ARE EROTIC LOVE, FILIAL LOVE, AND AGAPE LOVE. TO UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE THREE, IT IS APPROPRIATE TO DIFINE THEM ONE BY ONE.

FIRST IS EROTIC LOVE. EROTIC LOVE REFERS TO ROMANTIC, PASSIONATE, SEXUAL WAY OF LOVING THE PERSON. THE LEVEL OF LOVE ON THIS, BASED ONLY ON THE CORPOREAL OR ON THE MATERIAL, WHICH IS THE BODY OF THE PERSON. IT IS GIVEN, THAT THE BODY OF THE PERSON HAS A LOT OF FEATURES-FROM HEAD TO TOE WHICH BECOME AN ATTRACTIVE FACTORS TO THE LOVER. MEANING TO SAY, THE EROTIC LOVE IS DEFINED ON THE LEVEL OF THE VISIBLE THINGS. THUS, ON THE LEVEL OF THE SHADOWS.

SECONDLY IS FILIAL LOVE. FILIAL COMES FROM A GREEK WORD FILIUS WHICH MEANS SON. AS IT IS KNOWN, SON CAN BE A BROTHER AND CAN ALSO BE A SISTER. FILIAL LOVE REFERS TO A BLOOD-REALATED LOVE RELATIONSHIP. BUT THE MEANING OF IT DOES NOT ONLY STOP THERE. IT DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THIS LOVE REFERS ONLY TO A PERSON’S BROTHER OR A SISTER AND ALL HIS FAMILY MEMBERS. IT ALSO REFERS TO FRIENDSHIP RELATIONSHIP. A PERSON LOVES ANOTHER PERSON ON THE LEVEL OF FRIENSHIP. YOU LOVE THE PERSON NOT BECAUSE THAT PERSON GIVES SOMETHING IN RETURN TO YOU, BUT YOU LOVE HIM SIMPLY BECAUSE YOU FEEL THE GOOD IN THAT PERSON, BUT NO STRINGS ATTOUCHED ON THIS WAY OF LOVING.

LASTLY, THE AGAPE LOVE. AGAPE IS A GREEK WORD LOVE WHICH PARTICULARLY REFERS TO LOVE OF THE DIVINE. AS WHAT PLATO HAVE DISCUSSED, LOVE IS ALWAYS IN RELATION TO THE DIVINE. A LOVE LOVES HIS BELOVED BECAUSE HE LOVES GOD. IN THIS WAY, LOVING THAT PERSON WOULD ALSO BE A WAY OF LOVING THE CREATOR. HURTING YOUR BELOVED WILL ALSO BE A CLEAR EVIDENCE THAT YOU ALSO HURT GOD. SO, AGAPE LOVE IS A WAY OF LOVING THAT IS CONNECTED, SHOULD BE CONNECTED AND WILL ALWAYS BE IN CONNECTION WITH THE SUPREME FOUNTAIN AND THE FIRST CAUSE OF LOVE.

IN CONCLUSION, EVERY HUMAN PERSON WHO HAS THE CAPACITY AND POTENTIALITY TO LOVE OR HURT HIS OR HER BELOVED IS THEN GUILTY OF THIS QUESTION,

HOW DO YOU DEFINE LOVE AS REGARDS YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR BELOVED, FRIEND, FAMILIES AND OTHER NON-RATIONAL AS HUMAN PERSON IS?
