On Eid's Day

On the first, second, and third day of Eid

The butcher slashes the calf's throat.

Keenly sharp knife across its throat.

Then, gurgling foam, jets of blood soak the Earth

and death infills the quivering flesh.

Skinned, then chopped; the meat is packed in portions

for hungry children with expectant eyes,

who receive it gratefully.

Death, pain and tasty dishes: all this I saw.

But what would the calf make of all this?
