If only I shared my bed that night with you.

I’m sorry, I was still young.

I was afraid of being too close, and more importantly, not fantastic enough.

How could you possibly notice the bend in my neck the way that I notice yours — I’d think.

Or how could you wait for the sunrise to gloss just slightly across my arm, and then my chest, before warming our bed.

I’m not beautiful — I’d say to myself.

The moonlight won’t give me elegance.

And before you walked in, before you even had a moment to speak,

I already left you.
