A A A

Long days and even longer nights spent locked inside of a lodge with three hallways going in three different directions

Three beds in a room and my bed just so happened to be next to you

Your smile was as bright as a strobe light

And I remember everyday even if you were sick you still had that same smile on

Three months passed, almost three years

And the directions we went in life were different

But now I’m up in the middle of the night a year after you were found dead pondering and I can tell you that at only 22 you had so much life to live

And if I only could have been there 3,000 miles away with you that night that bullet would have never fired through your beautiful mind

And if only I knew when your finger was pulling the trigger if you had that knot in the bottom of your stomach and a voice telling you to not do it

But I guess I’ll never know

But I will never forget that smile of yours

And the laughs we had outside while chain-smoking rebelling against everyone we knew

Or in downtown Chicago walking a mile in the snow while listening to Fight Song wearing short sleeves as the frigid air blew

You had so much fight in you

And if only you could still be here

I would hug you so tight and tell you that you were one of my greatest friends I had during those long winter months

I will never forget you and if you’re ever listening up there I hope your soul is finally at peace.

Your journey on this earth was heavy, painful, and hard but now you are free

And on nights like these

A year after receiving the heart crushing news

I’m outside smoking and there’s one person I want to sit next to and laugh with again

And that, is you
