Is Kayla really crazy, or are the voices telling her something she needs to hear?

The breeze from the fan gently blew through Kayla's long chestnut brown hair, as she laid in her bed with her soft blue eyes gently beaming at the ceiling. It was a warm, sunny, beautiful spring day, and Kayla was wearing an outfit most fitting. Cut off jean shorts, with a white crop top. Simple, yet striking; just like her. She lay there, nice and calm with a marijuana bowl next to her that she had just taken a few hits from. Softly humming to the smooth sounds of her music, she hears a knock on her bedroom door. "Come in.", Kayla says in an annoyed tone. Kayla's mother walks in and sits beside her on the bed, knocking over her weed pipe. "Damnit mom. What do you want?", Kayla says angrily.

"I just want to talk to you, Kayla. Your father and I are worried. We noticed you've been staying out late smoking pot with Josh and we'd like you to stop.", Kayla's mom says timidly. "Aw mom, really? How sweet of you to care, but I'm kinda busy right now. Why don't we save it for later." Kayla sourly proclaims. "We're just worried, Kayla. We don't want the same thing that happened before to happen again", Mom says with patience. "Mom, just get out. I'm better now. I can handle myself.", Kayla bites back. "Josh will be here soon anyway." Kayla's mom stands up and fixes her outfit, then walks to the door. "I love you Kayla", she says as she closes the door.

"Jesus Christ!" Kayla says angrily, as she picks up her bowl and takes another hit. A jingle comes from her end table. She checks her cell phone, and a text from Josh reads, "I'm here". Kayla hops out of her bed and runs downstairs with excitement. She runs past her mom, sitting at the kitchen table doing her makeup. "Josh?", Kayla's mom asks without much surprise. "Yup!", Kayla says excitedly as she rushes to open the door. "Hey babe", Josh says cooly as Kayla pulls open the door. A tall, handsomely boyish guy walks in. Brown hair and pretty brown eyes with a cute smirk on his face. Dressed in tattered jeans and a Jimi Hendrix shirt, he looks like the quarterback of the football team who got stuck at a hippie convention. "Hi, Mrs. Brown", Josh says as he greets Kayla's mom politely. Kayla excitedly pulls him into her bedroom.

She plops down on her bed with a smirk on her face. "Babe you're stoned", Josh says as he fiddles with his pockets. "Did you get the stuff, baby?", Kayla asks with excitement when she notices Josh fishing for something in his jean pocket. Josh leans over Kayla and says, "Stick out your tongue". He places a film of acid onto her tongue and Kayla closes her mouth and lets it dissolve. He then places one into his mouth and joins her on the bed. They both lay down and relax, enjoying Kayla's mellow music and waiting for the effects of the acid to kick in. A heavy knock comes from Kayla's door, and the couple sits up. "Yeah?", Kayla says in an irritated voice. "Can I come in?", asks Kayla's mom from outside the door. "Yes, mom", Kayla says. Mrs. Brown enters the room, "I've gotta go to the grocery store and then stop by your grandmother's so I won't be home for a few hours and daddy says he'll be home late today. Make sure you guys stay out of trouble and call me if you need anything. Love you.", Mrs. Brown says with barely a pause between each word and rushes out closing the door behind her.

"Okie Dokie", Kayla says sarcastically as she rolls her eyes and lays back down on her bed. "Want a drink?", Josh asks as he walks towards the door. "Yeah, can you grab me a Pepsi, babe?" says Kayla, barely lifting her head to look at him. Kayla loved to escape, and acid was the only drug she had yet to try. She was so ready to feel this trip after the drama with her mother.

"KAYLA!" yells a stern male voice, much different than Josh's. Kayla jumps up startled. Tears start to well in her eyes, and Josh walks in with the sodas. "You okay, babe? Tripping already?", Josh says jokingly as he hands Kayla her soda. He walks over to the stereo to turn up the music, then sits next to Kayla. "Yeah, I'm okay.. just feeling a little weird.", Kayla says in an expressionless voice. "This is good stuff, Kay. It might hit ya pretty hard", Josh says in a calm voice. He leans over to give her a kiss and embraces her until she seems calm again. "Josh, can I tell you something?", Kayla says reluctantly, as Josh gently runs his fingers through her long pretty hair. "Of course, baby. You can tell me anything.", Josh says sweetly, as he looks concerningly into Kayla's eyes.

"Okay...well, remember a while back when I told you about my problem? About the voices I used to hear?..", Kayla blurts out anxiously. "Yeah, I remember.", Josh says. "Well, I think they've come back. I keep hearing this awful message from a man. It's the same man who used to talk to me before. He says such a terrible thing over and over again, and I'm scared. I don't want them to lock me away again, Josh. I can't go back, I can't. I thought this was over. I thought I beat it.", Kayla says anxiously with tears running down her face.

"Baby, it's okay. It doesn't have to be that bad. Not like the way it was before. We'll take care of it this time before they need to take you away. Don't worry. I'll stay until your parents get back and we can talk to them together.", Josh says reassuringly. He hugs Kayla and kisses her forehead, holding her until her breathing calms and she seemingly relaxes. "You know babe, it could be nothing. I'm sure it's no big deal. I've been hearing a voice too. Ever since we did that bag of shrooms down at Mark's, it's been saying the same message to me over and over. It almost sounds like my mom's voice. It's probably nothing.", Josh says calmly as he continues to hold Kayla."What's your voice even saying, babe? I mean, it can't be that bad, right?", Josh asks.

Kayla sniffles and reluctantly responds, "Well... It keeps saying... Oh Josh, baby, please don't be mad!". "I would never", Josh assures Kayla. "Okay", Kayla responds. "The man keeps saying that you're going to murder me. I know it's completely ridiculous. I mean, you're the best thing in my life right now. It's crazy to even think you'd hurt me." Josh lays there, still calm and listening. "I'm sorry, Josh. I know you would never hurt me. I just have to get help. It's just my schizophrenia coming back. I should've never stopped taking my meds." Kayla says, trying to reassure Josh and kissing his forehead. Josh still remains still and expressionless. "What does this voice say?", Kayla asks Josh as she pulls away from kissing him. No response comes from Josh. "Well?", Kayla asks in an irritable voice. Josh leans in and looks Kayla in the eyes with a concerned expression. "It's saying... I have to get rid of you." Josh says in a sorrowful tone as he wraps his hands around Kayla's neck.

Later in the evening, Mrs. Brown walks into the front door of the house. She sits her keys on the kitchen table and makes her way towards Kayla's bedroom. "Is anyone home? I was gonna order some take out. Hello? Hellllooo-", Mrs. Brown stops and screams. Reluctantly walking towards the middle of the bedroom, she sobs as she sees Kayla hanging from the ceiling fan with a sign on her chest reading, 'The voices told me to do it.'
