The Last One

It had seemed like such a good idea at the time, a way to get to know his workmates over lunch. He slipped out and brought back a bag of doughnuts, one for each of them.

Coffee from the machine, they could chat as they nibbled their way through the fried sugar confections. By the afternoon he wouldn’t be the outsider, the new guy, but more like one of them.

Well, that had been his idea, but it didn’t seem to be working out at all that way.

One after one, his workmates gave his plate of offerings a look of either disdain or disgust, before carrying on their way out of the door. Not so much as a word had been exchanged.

There were six in the team, including himself. Six doughnuts on the plate. He reached down, picked one up and began to eat. There was only one of the team left apart from himself, and she seemed to be getting ready to leave.

What was her name? Karen....no, Carol, that was it. He’d ask, he’d offer before she left.

Hey, Carol, would you like a doughnut?” He held out the plate on which four still remained.

Err, no. No thank you,” she said.

He looked at the plate, feeling mildly rebuffed, but at least she had acknowledged his existence. Picking up another doughnut, he began to eat, three down and three to go. He had to admit that he was beginning to feel mildly sick.

I’ll be at the salad bar down the road with the others,” Carol said as she walked towards the door. “Perhaps tomorrow you might join us.”

And then she was gone and he was left alone. He ate another and another. Salad had never seemed more attractive.

And, hey, he had a date! With Carol, no less. Not bad for day one, he guessed.

The question he had to ask himself now though was could he possibly eat that last doughnut.
