“The Stairs to the Sea”

The spray from

the incoming waves

hit her face

a millisecond

after breaking

against the rocks,

she sat above

the water’s reach

on some stairs

that went to

a beach

that only existed

during an extremely

low tide

right now hidden

beneath

the churning

foamy water

of the sea,

she looked down

into the dancing

waves

and steadfast

rocks

lit only by the

half moon

above the cove

giving the water

a fluorescent

glint

like a big

lightbulb

was turned on

a few feet

below

the surface,

she was barefoot

wearing shorts

and a tee shirt

with a pullover

hoodie

her legs hanging

down

catching more of

the spray

then her face

as she sits

leaning over a

lower rail

of the stairs,

she stares into

the whirlpool

below her

watching the water

work its way

up the stairs

towards her

like looking into

a giant blender,

she was a

local girl

so she knew

it was just

a matter of

time

till the well

worn

flat platform

she was sitting

on

would be

consumed

by the sea

at least

temporarily

only to be

released again

with the dawning

of the sun

and the next

low tide,

her whole body

was feeling limp

like it wants

to just slide

away down

and become one

with the sea

a wandering

wave

just trying to

find its way

back home,

she could feel

her grip loosening

on the rail

her mind

lost in the

stars

the hypnotic

pulse

of that eerily

lit world

below her

beckoning her

as if it was

offering her

safety from the

evils

that were pursuing

her,

her hoodie

starts to feel

heavy

weighing her down

as its cotton

threads

begin to hold

on to the mist

and spray

from the sea

like all of

the problems

weighing on her

mind

she wanted to

slip away

from both of

them

and be free,

she had tripped

on her way

down the unlit

path

the front of

her right leg

picking up

a deep gash

that is still

oozing out

the jagged cut,

the water crept

closer now

the spray from

the waves

changed to a

splash

that hit

against her

exposed

wound

a jolt ran

through her body

as the salty

cold sea water

mixed with her

warm blood

bringing her

state of mind

back to the

plane of reality,

she stands up

pulls off her

hoodie

her thin tee

shirt

clinging to her

body

as she ties

the long sleeves

of the hoodie

around the upper

rail of the

platform

of stairs

she was sitting

on

leaving behind

her

drenched hoodie

and she hopes

some of her

mental burdens

as well,

she takes a

last look

towards the water

when she gets

to the top

of the stairs

her hoodie

hanging from

the upper rail

by its long

sleeves

casting an empty

dark shadow

from the light

of the half

moon

across where

she was once

sitting,

where it is

now making

body like

movements

in the air

coming to life

in the soft

waves

of the wind…
