My Nana would warn against telling a daughter she was beautiful, against spoiling her with words. Our strength measured by how much pain we could carry upon our bare shoulders. A continuum of critiques, birthing an armor impervious to any bully on the playground, because none would measure up to the ones at Home.

Our affections measured in tears; Our loyalty measured by our fists; A borrowed roof serving as an I Love You.

I haven't eyes to see pretty words as anything more than an empty box. Skin wrinkles, stretch marks scar, and saying ‘I'm beautiful’ is the same as saying ‘The Sky is Blue’.... because it is.... but only a grey sky will cry with you... and that's nobodies favorite color.
