Some old memories about my grandfather. I guess both our memories of those moments are unreliable at this point.

I remember all too vividly

the feel of my hand in his

strong war hardened skin.

The smell of cigarettes and soap

as my grandfather pulled me in.

I remember all too vividly

the rush of his foreign words

jumbling into a scared cascade.

My grandfather held me

and told me that we must escape.

I remember all too vividly

a man who could not remember me

but who took me in his arms

and into a dangerous jungle

that only he could see.

I remember all too vividly

Someone I loved

who didn't know that they loved me.

And over drinks I made a joke,

when the safety of years had come,

about getting lost with that old man.

How funny we must have looked

escaping that imaginary jungle hand in hand.

"That's not funny," they said through their side eyed stares.

I was the only one laughing

about a memory

where I was the only one there.
