Alone in the light,

I wait for you

You ask me to call you Mother

I sit like a good girl,

Waiting intently and listen.

I hear you upstairs,

Opening every door,

Peeking in to spy who’s there.

I hear my siblings

One by one,

And Papa, as they realize you’re there.

Their screams are quick,

Some only gasp,

Before I hear the thud like the fall of an axe.

When you return

It’s with a loving smile,

I take your hand and you lead me away

We leave this house

A burning ruin,

I follow you into the wood.

There you’ll look after me

Forever until I’m gone,

For I’m your little girl

And you are

Mother.
