For Better or Worse

by Jasmine Renee Parker

Our phones lay between us like fraternal newborn babies.

The only sounds, our silent smiles, as we laughed at our inner secrets.

Broken bound, our broken vows were headed for disaster,

With so many questions, and not enough answers, we were arguing more than laughing.

This scene was last seen, in so many homes,

destroyed by money and egos, complicated by children and lost people.

Not easily won by throwing free throws, when jabs are thrown freely for self-seeking goals.

How do you win when your opponent is your teammate?

Screaming out loud, “for God’s sake!”, when vowing under God’s sake to love, honor, and obey,

You replace those vows to see how Adam and Eve’s apple taste.

Love songs can’t replace experiences no more than poetry can replace emotions,

No more than a ring can make you devoted, ‘cuz when your heart’s sinking you rather stay afloat

And you rather hide it then expose it.

Nothing beautiful about heartache except the sweet lessons from the bitter taste.

Don’t want to be a statistic of another divorce case, so in my case I stayed and prayed

And even though the devil preyed, “we shall overcome” like a Negro slave.
