This poem started out as a poem about a woman I once knew, then I realized that she was just part of a the times that we lived in.

We heard them in the shadows of the evening

The sounds were like whispers through the trees.

They touched us as moonbeams touch water

And many drifted off, into their breeze.

Their many lives were like fables lost in truth

And they wrote songs about peace and love

But now I realize that drugs did the talking

And Hippie flowers replaced the dove.

I heard them in those shadows of the evening

And their sounds were like whispers in the trees.

They touched me with the songs that they sang

Then they disappeared like clouds in a breeze.

It was a time for hearing whispers in the trees

A peace movement that got high and blew away.

Now the pendulum slows --- back to division

And screams drown those whispers of yesterday.
