Paper Ready?

A sheet of paper, notebook, A4 pad; more or less anything will do for the immediate purpose.

Now choose your weapon. A quill, maybe, with a bottle of ink, or maybe a fountain pen. Both can give large blots, so you’ll need to take care. And the ink will smudge if you should shed a tear, if your reader sheds a tear too.

Perhaps a felt tip would be more to your liking. Bold, clear, forceful! Again smudging can be a problem; also, unless your paper is nice and thick you might find your words appearing on the following sheet, or even worse, your writing surface itself.

Pencils are ideal for someone that does not want to commit, that is hesitant, unsure of what to say. Think how easy it is to erase those marks and change them to say something else. The downside – well, it’s not so easy to read, is it.

Personally, if I’m going to write by hand I’ll choose a ballpoint pen. They still have the permanence, although there are some that erase with friction, supposedly. It’s worth taking the effort to scribble somewhere else first, just to get the ink flowing. And hope that it does not run out or you might find yourself writing invisibly.

They can be quite effective at displaying strength of feeling. Press too hard with a ballpoint and it will quite easily stab through the paper. Who needs an exclamation mark when your full stop pops straight through to the back.

Whatever implement you choose to use, remember this is a very effective weapon you hold in your hand. Dreams can be built, hearts can be broken or mended. Words can caress but they can kill too.

Write in the heat of the moment if you must, it’s a great way of sorting out your feelings, letting off steam, funnelling anger. Don’t post it, deliver it, pass it on until you’ve cooled down and checked that you mean just what you say.
