A long-awaited moment, never tried
She braces herself and prepares for flight
Lifting her wings and spreading her feathers
She leaps off the branch and plunges downwards

Fear rising, she freezes, then frantically flaps her wings
The earth’s surface closes in, she continues to fall
Closing her eyes and clenching her beak
She comes before the ground and stops falling

Puzzled, she opens her eyes, before her is the ground
With nowhere to cushion her landing
Nowhere to survive the fall
Nothing to keep her safe

But none of this matters
She is no longer falling, she is flying in the air
Her wings moving on their own, instincts taking over

A new master at flight
